Clean Kaïlash Project

History

In 2004, after 10 years of successive trips to Tibet, Jacqueline Meier went on pilgrimage around the Mount Kaïlash in Western part of Tibet. The Kaïlash, Mount known as the Khang Rimpoche by the Tibetan people, is a pilgrimage place in the heart and soul of the Hindu and Buddhists. Considered as the axis mundis, this crowned mountain is situated near the source of the four largest rivers of the Indian sub-continent:  the Bhramaputra, the Karnali, the Sutlej and the Indus.

A few years ago, Mount Kaïlash became a tourist destination in full rise. In 2005, approximately 4 000 tourists and 30 000 pilgrims went to the crowned area of the Mount Kaïlash. By 2007 the number reached 70 000, tourists and pilgrims coming from all around the world to visit this sacred region.

This increase in human presence is directly related to the exponential increase in the volume of waste. Urgent action is essential  to bring back and maintain cleanliness not only in the village of Darchen, starting point of the pilgrimage, but also in the areas of the Manasarovar lake, and on the 56 km long pilgrimage route. Here are the key points of the “ Clean Kaïlash Project “ :
  • Commitment of the local population to collect the waste.

  • Responsibility of the aforesaid populations, of travelers and traveling agencies.
  • Collaboration with the people and authorities concerned and with those who are already involved on site.

This is a very important issue which concerns the present and future life of our planet. This project brings together 3 dimensions :

  • Long lasting development - respecting the environment
  • Social improvement - employment
  • Education -  supporting  local culture

For the implementation of this project, we have created the Clean Planet Association which is a non-profit organization. Clean Planet Association is the official founderand suppoter of this project.
